Club History, Champions and Presidents
Our Temecula Creek Inn Women's Golf Club was formed over 40 years ago in June, 1975.
The original owner of the golf course, Irwin Hirsch, opened the first nine holes in May, 1970, adding a second nine shortly thereafter. He named the course Rancho California Golf Club, but changed the name to Rainbow Canyon Golf Club a couple of years later. When our ladies' club was formed, the course was Rainbow Canyon Golf Club. One of our long time members, Pat Byron, and her husband, were visiting the course in 1981 and talked with Mr. Hirsch about his plans to develop another nine holes, which we now know as Stone House.
In 1970, when Mr. Hirsch opened the golf course, the population in the Temecula-Murrieta area was 2,769, slightly smaller than the quarter million people today!
This was one of the few women's golf clubs in the area, so membership swelled to a record 123 members in 1987. Members came from Escondido, Vista, and Fallbrook (and one from Coronado) to the south, and Wildomar and Lake Elsinore to the north. At that time, Carole Harrison, our President from 2015 to 2016, was Membership Chair. She and her husband had moved to the Rainbow Canyon area a couple of years earlier. Lenore Anderson, another long time member, joined in 1985.
The course was sold in 1990 to J.W. and Kathryn Colachis, who named the resort Temecula Creek Inn. They also owned Rancho Bernardo Inn and formed JC Resorts, a golf club management company with which we are familiar. The ladies' club then changed its name to Temecula Creek Inn Women's Golf Club.
Today we have about 70 members. We have evolved to keep abreast of member interests. In the late 1990's, we joined San Diego County Women's Golf Association to serve our hhandicapping needs and so we could play at various courses and participate in team-play matches. In 2005, we obtained a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) defining the club as a Social Golf Club. We joined Santa Margarita Women's Golf Association in 2009 for even more course variety and team-play opportunities, and we developed a website that same year.
Our living, breathing membership has changed its age span, geographical dispersion, skill level and choice of activities and competitions. The By-Laws and Standing Rules have been updated many times, emphasizing different dress codes, games, procedures and affiliations. But what hasn't changed is the dedication of our ladies to playing golf and enjoying the camaraderie of members.
The last of the charter members, Cela Dillon, passed away in early 2004 at age 98. She played into her 90's, so she set a vigorous standard for us all! The club proudly carries on that tradition...perhaps for another four decades.
The Club has had good stewardship over its many years, and has produced some impressive Club Champions.
